The focus of my work is on the local landscape around the source of the river Waveney, on the Norfolk / Suffolk border.
My practice acknowledges the history of hemp textile production from the seventeenth century and makes the link with the current industrial use of hemp for protection and insulation.
The process of having conversations and involving people with the development of the work is an important aspect of my practice. Working with local history establishes the connection there was with the landscape and can help re-establish continuity, a sense of belonging.
This process of engagement helps to break down the barriers between the viewer and the artwork. I have created sensory devices and visual triggers by using a combination of both printed and manipulated materials and digital sound.
I give permission to touch, smell and hear the work. I create sensory triggers that evoke the memory within us.
