The seeds of this travelling exhibition were sown in 2002 on realising that we all had some connection with Germany either through friends, journeys or in Pam and Paul Winbolt's case, living and working in both Mannheim and Nürnberg as professional ballet dancers. I had exhibited and worked closely with Sue Putnam Vüllers in Portsmouth in the early 1970's. Our friendship, commitment to art and eagerness to make new work has continued for more than thirty years.

My suggestion that 49&Rising exhibit in Euskirchen was warmly received by Sue and a reciprocal British exhibition was arranged for eight German artists who have subsequently become Art&Weise. With snow on the ground the first meeting of the sixteen was held in Euskirchen in February 2005. Inspiration, an overlap of themes, the challenge to create work either in collaboration or in direct response to the locations has been developed at a distance. We now trust that the efforts of all those involved will be rewarded by the enjoyment on the part of visitors to the first showing of the exhibition in Euskirchen and subsequently in Norwich, Newmarket and March.
